New Pharmacy Technician Program!

March 2010: Blackstone Career Institute (BCI), one of the nation’s first distance education schools, has been approved to offer a new Pharmacy Technician Diploma Program by the Pennsylvania Department of Education, Division of Private Licensed Schools, and the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council. The new program meets the quality educational and business standards of both of these organizations.

“Blackstone is pleased to add this new course to our catalog of career training programs in the allied health and paralegal fields. In selecting new programs, we seek those that will offer adult learners an opportunity to enter high-growth career fields. Well-trained pharmacy technicians are in demand in both the healthcare and retail settings. They play a vital role as a member of the healthcare team by assisting pharmacists to prepare medications and provide customer service,” says Kevin McCloskey, president of Blackstone Career Institute.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 25% between 2008 and 2018, much faster than the average for all occupations.

The Blackstone Pharmacy Technician Diploma program covers the fundamentals of assisting the pharmacist, including interacting with customers, medication preparation, inventory control, and counting and labeling medications. The course also provides instruction in medical and pharmaceutical terminology, pharmacy calculations, body systems and disorders, English usage, ethics and professionalism, and finding a job in the field.

Like Blackstone’s other diploma programs in the allied health and paralegal fields, the Pharmacy Technician Program offers students the convenience of studying at home at their own pace and on their own schedule. Blackstone also provides career training in medical transcription, medical billing and coding, medical and dental office assisting, and the legal assistant/paralegal field.

One of the oldest distance education companies in the country, Blackstone Career Institute is licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools and is accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council, Washington, DC, as well as regionally accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, Philadelphia, PA.  For more information, visit our Pharmacy Technician program page.
