Curriculum Update for Online Medical Transcription Program

February 2025: Last month, Blackstone Career Institute relaunched the online Medical Transcription Program with a curriculum update. The revised program now includes the cost to sit for the Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS) certification exam, among other features. The program tuition was raised to incorporate more resources for students and remains cost-effective.

Blackstone is committed to making post-secondary education accessible and helping students best prepare for entry-level careers. This accredited program that leads to certification is designed to ready students for a rewarding career in medical transcription.

According to the Occupational Outlook Handbook, 9,600 medical transcription job openings are expected each year. The median salary as of May 2023 was $37,060, with the top 10% of earners making more than $52,880. Part-time work is also available in this career.

Blackstone’s Medical Transcription Program is designed for individuals interested in the medical transcription field who want to gain RHDS certification. Gaining this industry-recognized credential can demonstrate a level of expertise to prospective employers. Given the competitive job market, becoming a Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist can be beneficial to gaining work in the medical transcription field.

The field of medical transcription provides the opportunity for remote, flexible work. Becoming a medical transcriptionist can be a viable career path for parents looking to stay at home with young children or professionals that desire travel flexibility.

The Medical Transcription Program helps students to build typing speed and efficiency, sharpen grammar and punctuation skills, and learn medical transcription and editing methods. Through this curriculum update, Blackstone aims to better prepare professionals for the workforce, aid in student learning, and give students a clear path to certification and a career in medical transcription.

Blackstone made the decision to include the certification materials in the program. This change will encourage students to pursue RHDS certification upon completing the program.

Students receive AHDI’s Student membership, the digital RHDS Exam Guide, and RHDS exam voucher. The Student membership unlocks networking and education opportunities for students. The RHDS Exam Guide is designed by AHDI to help students study for the RHDS exam. The RHDS exam voucher pays for the exam fees.

In addition to Blackstone’s time-tested curriculum, the program includes three eBooks accessed through the Online Student Center: Stedman’s Medical Dictionary for the Health Profession and Nursing (7th Edition), Essentials of Pharmacology for Health Professions (9th edition), and The Book of Style for Medical Transcription (3rd edition). Also included is a foot pedal for dictation and transcription that students can utilize in the field.

The 100-hour digital practicum with mentorship from a supervisor will help equip students for the workforce by providing real-world experience. Students will practice transcribing authentic records and notes from a wide range of healthcare practitioners to solidify what they learned in the program.

The online Medical Transcription Program remains affordable after the curriculum update, with payment options as low as $99 down and $99 a month. Students also have the option to pay in full and save $409.00 on tuition with a one-time payment of $2,586.00.

Blackstone remains dedicated to providing affordable distance education and is continually looking for new ways to improve the curriculum and student experience.
