Employers want to see that you can take the knowledge you’ve acquired and execute it well with desired results. Showing what you’ve done is always better than sharing what you know. AI data centers are a necessity for storing the servers that transmit and retain all the information across the internet. However, these centers require significant amounts of energy to function and water to cool the temperatures of the servers.
Conducted studies have shown if AI continues to grow, 24 – 44 million metrics of carbon dioxide will be released into the atmosphere by 2030. To compare this with numbers we understand, it would be equivalent to an additional 5 – 10 million cars on U.S. roads. The amount of water used to cool down the AI data centers would be equal to the amount of water 6 – 10 million households in America use yearly.
While this may sound jarring, data centers have been around since the 1940s. But the rise of AI demands an increase of data centers to produce a large amount of energy.
This year, in 2026, the electricity needed to run data centers will put these infrastructures in fifth place world-wide for the largest electricity consumption. Estimates also show that using AI to search information uses five times more electricity than a normal Google web search.
