5 Remote Jobs Without a Degree
A remote job can be appealing for many reasons. But maybe you are changing careers, balancing family responsibilities, or just starting out and do not want to spend four years earning a degree before you can begin remote work.
The good news is that a remote job does not always require a bachelor’s degree. Some careers are open to people with a high school diploma, a certificate, focused training, or relevant experience. These five career paths can give you a practical place to start. Still, employers set their own requirements, and not every position in these fields is remote.
1. Legal Assistant or Paralegal
If you are organized, comfortable with research, and good at keeping track of details, legal support work may be worth exploring. Paralegals and legal assistants help attorneys organize files, conduct research, draft documents, and prepare for cases.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that paralegals and legal assistants earned a median annual wage of 62,890 dollars in May 2025. Many people enter the field with an associate degree or paralegal certificate, although some employers may consider applicants who have a high school diploma and relevant experience.
Some legal work still requires access to courts, files, or clients, but other duties can be handled electronically. Employers such as Axiom recruit for remote paralegal work, although qualifications differ by position.
Blackstone Career Institute’s online Legal Assistant/Paralegal Program is designed for students with a high school diploma or equivalent. Students can work at their own pace while building career-focused legal skills. The program qualifies graduates to sit for the Certified Paralegal (CP®) Exam.
2. Medical Billing and Coding Specialist
Healthcare creates a huge amount of information, and it has to be recorded accurately.
Medical billing and coding specialists work with that information. They may assign standardized codes, prepare claims, review records, correct rejected claims, and help healthcare providers receive payment. Much of the work takes place on a computer, which is one reason the field can include remote job opportunities.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics places medical coding within the broader medical records specialist occupation. Medical records specialists had a median annual wage of 51,140 dollars in May 2025. Employment is projected to grow 8 percent from 2025 to 2035. The BLS says these workers usually need to possess a postsecondary certificate, although a high school diploma may be sufficient for some positions.
Blackstone’s online Medical Billing and Coding Program covers medical terminology, insurance, claims, and coding systems. Blackstone also notes that work-from-home positions are available in the field. The program is designed to prepare students for entry-level work and the Certified Professional Coder (CPC®) exam.
3. Medical Transcriptionist
Medical transcription may fit someone with strong listening skills, accurate typing, and patience for detailed work.
Medical transcriptionists turn healthcare professionals’ recorded notes into written medical documentation. They may also review reports for accuracy and edit documents created with speech recognition software.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that medical transcriptionists who work from home may have some flexibility in their schedules. The median annual wage was 40,410 dollars in May 2025.
There is a tradeoff. The BLS projects employment to decline 4 percent from 2025 to 2035, as speech recognition and other technologies automate part of the work. Even so, about 6,200 openings are projected each year on average because existing workers leave the occupation.
Blackstone’s online Medical Transcription Program focuses on medical terminology, anatomy, grammar, transcription, and editing. It also includes preparation for the Registered Healthcare Documentation Specialist (RHDS) credential.
4. Customer Service Representative
For someone who wants a remote job without first completing specialized career training, customer service can offer a direct entry point.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics says customer service representatives usually need to possess a high school diploma or equivalent and receive training on the job. They answer questions, solve problems, process orders, and help customers understand products or services. The median wage was 21.53 dollars per hour, or 44,770 dollars per year, in May 2025.
The same BLS profile notes that some companies may offer work-from-home positions. Remote customer service can involve phone calls, email, chat, or a combination of them. Strong communication and patience are especially useful when a customer is frustrated.
Read job listings carefully. Some employers advertise fully remote positions, while others require employees to live in a particular state or attend in-person training.
5. Bookkeeping Clerk
Bookkeeping can suit someone who likes order and numbers. These clerks record financial transactions, check figures, manage invoices, and help businesses maintain accurate records.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a median annual wage of 50,670 dollars in May 2025. Entry requirements vary. Some employers prefer college coursework, while others hire people with a high school diploma and provide training on the job.
Because modern bookkeeping relies heavily on accounting software, spreadsheets, and digital records, remote positions are available. For example, Intuit recruits remote bookkeeping professionals to help businesses manage their books from home.
The BLS projects overall employment in the occupation to decline, but it still expects about 144,100 openings each year on average as workers move into other occupations or leave the workforce.
Finding the Right Remote Job for You
The best job is not simply the one that lets you work from home. A remote job should also fit your strengths, income needs, schedule, and willingness to train.
Look at real job postings before choosing a path. Pay attention to the qualifications employers repeatedly request. You may find that a certificate or several months of focused training can close the gap between where you are now and the work you want.
For people interested in legal or healthcare careers, Blackstone Career Institute offers flexible online training in Legal Assistant and Paralegal studies, Medical Billing and Coding, and Medical Transcription. These programs can be completed from home and focus on career skills, making them an option for adults who want to prepare for a remote job without committing to a four-year degree.
